Computer Vision versus Image Processing

Updated: Jul 1

Although computer vision and image processing seem close to each other, they are actually different concepts.

What brings the two concepts together is that they both produce output as a result of certain calculations on images. To put it briefly;

What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision is the field of artificial intelligence that gives machines and computers the ability to understand and interpret visualizations of objects based on machine learning techniques.

Computer vision aims to generate information numerically or symbolically and uses a variety of techniques to process, analyze, and understand patterns using digital images, videos, or other visual input.

Computer vision systems analyze objects or processes in real time, make sense of them visually, and detect errors and defects.

These systems have advantages such as objectivity, speed, accuracy, continuity, and traceability. In this respect, its performance can quickly exceed human capabilities.

Basically, its functions consist of three stages:

  1. Taking the image with visual tools

  2. Processing the received image

  3. Making sense of the image

Today, computer vision technology has begun to be used in many areas, such as facial recognition applications, augmented reality, health, agriculture, and production.

What is Image Processing?

Image processing enables the identification and interpretation of data received using certain engineering techniques and algorithms on images or videos in digital environments.

Image processing mimics the human ability to process an image and extract meaning from the image it processes.

The functions of image processing are completed by,

  1. Image acquisition with tools such as cameras and other image-capturing devices

  2. Image processing such as image restoration and compression

  3. Identifying areas and separating them into separate objects

  4. Revealing distinctive features (color, shape, etc.)

  5. Interpretation using specific techniques and algorithms

Today, image processing technology is used in many fields, such as demographic information analysis, medicine, the military industry, robotics, radiology, and security systems.

Computer Vision and Image Processing

Although image processing and computer vision are different concepts, they work together in many areas.

Computer vision systems aim to replicate the complexity of the human visual system in order to make sense of the digital world. They can use image processing algorithms for this purpose. As a result, computer vision aims to extract meaningful information from these inputs.

Image processing analyzes both digital and optical images. It analyzes and interprets the input by passing the images through stages such as filtering and optimizing.

Computer vision focuses on better understanding the visual world by giving machines the ability to extract meaningful information from images, videos, and other visual input.

The most common uses of image processing are pattern recognition, video processing, image enhancement, and filtering. Computer vision is mostly used in areas such as error detection and object detection.
